We begin 2006 experiencing the highest utility bills ever. Not to worry. For Coloradans the year also brings opportunity for federal tax credits and utility company incentives.
The federal government passed the Energy Policy Act that is effective January 1, 2006. In Colorado, voters approved Amendment 37, a legislative amendment, that creates levels of renewable energy production that must be achieved by utility companies. It also goes into effect in 2006.
Tax breaks are available for those making energy-conserving improvements to their homes. For example, consumers can receive tax credits up to $500 on the amount they spend to upgrade thermostats, to caulk leaks, or to stop energy waste.
A credit of up to $300 is permitted for purchases of highly-efficient space or water heating systems. And, a new provision provides a 10% tax credit for expenditures with respect to improvements to your house envelope.
For those interested in solar, a 30% of-the-cost credit, or up to $2,000, may be taken off your tax bill for installing a solar, hot-water system.
If you are buying a new home, your contractor may be eligible for tax credits on energy-efficient features and perhaps some would be passed on to you as a lower price.
Utility bill incentives in Colorado will be defined by March 31, 2006. Provisions of Amendment 37 specify rebates for installing solar electric systems and allowing for net metering, with excess energy production sold back to the utility.
Energy costs are expected to increase by double digit figures in the foreseeable future. This may be the right time for you to decide to take advantage of the various rebates and incentives. BigHorn Design Group will have updated information sheets at both its Frisco and Silverthorne stores.
As advocates of Green Building, The BigHorn Center in Silverthorne, CO has received numerous awards for its energy-conserving design from the Department of Energy (DOE), State of Colorado, American Institute of Architects, Colorado Renewable Energy Society, and others.
Energy efficient detailing includes sky lights, clerestory windows, and other daylighting, photovoltaics, a wind turbine, Solar Wall, energy-management computer, photocell lighting controls, and more.
