When you think of a log home, the cozy mountain cabin is probably the first image that comes to mind. While there will always be a romance for the log cabin in the forest, the log home and what it looks like today is changing. At least it’s changing for one rather unique log home company. Grand Teton Log & Lumber puts a modern twist on tradtional log homes.
When you think of a log home, the cozy mountain cabin is probably the first image that comes to mind. While there will always be a romance for the log cabin in the forest, the log home and what it looks like today is changing. At least it’s changing for one rather unique log home company. “Recent changes in building trends along with upgrades to building codes has resulted in fewer logs being sold” says Casey Eason, General Manager at Grand Teton Log & Lumber in Victor, ID. What’s interesting is that Casey seems to welcome these changes and even becomes excited when talking about what is happening in the industry. “It’s not that people don’t like logs anymore, they’re just ready to see them used differently.”
It is this opinion of what people want in a home that now guides Grand Teton Log and Lumber’s approach and has helped them weather the current housing and real estate market. Grand Teton Log & Lumber, formerly Jackson Hole Log Homes was founded in the mid 80’s.
“Our Mill is still the backbone of our company, and we’re extremely fortunate that we have the company’s founder and his experience at the core of our business, he has layed the foundation for the kind of company we are today.”
This kind of company Casey is referring to is one that is not afraid to step out of the mold of the traditional log home business. “You have to address the concerns that people have with log homes, and if we can help our customers design and build a more energy and cost efficient home while accentuating the use of log work, then that’s what we’ll do. There is too much mystery surrounding the purchase of a log home. I think that’s because the industry still focuses on selling logs, instead of designing and selling homes. Without a sole focus of selling logs, we can show customers the way to build a unique custom home that blends the efficiencies of conventional building materials with the beauty and natural comforts of logs or timbers.”
Accommodating today’s more popular hybrid style of building, Grand Teton Log & Lumber is continuously turning out new designs, usually in the way of smaller, more subdued structures that differ from the lodge-like floor plans you might expect to see at a log home company so close to Jackson. Their various home plans can easily be personalized or built as designed using log, dovetailed timbers, timber frame construction or with log or timber components mixed in with conventional building materials.
“We are a small company with a very personal and hands-on approach. Once our clients see how we operate; we usually end up helping them design a very personal custom home, based on their ideas. This interactive design element is fundamental to our business model. We might not sell the complete log home kits like we did in the 80’s, but here in the west, logs will always have their place, and building with them in one way or another, has never been more fun.”
