Rustic, redefined, refined

This Arts and Crafts lake home with flared walls sits atop a rusticated fieldstone base. In the rear elevation, the pedestal effect is further accomplished by the stone arcade. From base to top, finishing features increase in detail. Gambreled cross gables, the bell-curved roof over a tower, naturally weathered roof shingles, and stained side shingles and shutters, are hallmarks of this Victorian-era style.

The main house serves as the progenitor for the similarly styled boathouse. The base material continues around the lake wall, bonding structures and landscaping. In another Harrison home, the tasting room becomes a grotto—groin vault ceiling, wide-plank floor, and generous mortar in the stonework.

Regardless of size and scope, the consideration of scale, proportion, and materials are crucial to a design that fulfills the client’s vision. Wide-plank flooring sets the stage in the breakfast/living room. While heavy rustic wood frames the room, color, tone, and advantageous use of limited natural light illuminates the design palette. Rectilinear cuts in the fireplace stone afford an architectural look. Darker staining of wood above the fireplace and on breakfast room beams contrast and define the space.

Sometimes a personality trait serendipitously jumps from the owner’s vision and joins in play with the dream. A sculpture of five different noodles engendered the silver and nickel inlaid “Pasta Man” for the Tuscan kitchen. Design and materials — Italian tile floors, a coved ceiling, and a procession of reclaimed beams into the keeping room—sing a welcome harmony, making this a comfortable working and gathering room for all.
