Jackson Hole craftsman, John Walker, began honing his woodworking skills as a 16-year-old...for years, carefully plying his craft, while creating individual works of art. Some 25 years later, having founded Mill Iron Timberworks, he channels that same passion and attention to detail into crafting much larger pieces of artistic achievement – works of art his clients awake to and call, “home.”
Now, John offers his discerning eye to those who yearn for the finely crafted Rocky Mountain homes of their imaginations. Under his watchful direction, Mill Iron Timberworks has constructed homes in western Wyoming and southern Montana for the past nine years.
While many homebuilders have a recognizable style, John’s creative side thrives on the challenge of diversity... compelling him to work from a wide-ranging palette of design and material. Having mastered the distinctly rugged look and feel of the native log home, as well as the intricate joinery and awe-inspiring structure of the timber frame masterpiece, Mill Iron Timberworks’ portfolio goes beyond the traditional mountain retreat to the crisp, clean lines of the uniquely contemporary...and the beautiful simplicity of steel.
“Many people don’t recognize the challenge of contemporary homes,” John says. “With a modern design, everything has to be done perfectly; mistakes cannot be hidden.” The consistent, binding thread in John’s work, as always, is the exacting workmanship he inspires and the quality material he demands.
With this approach, John carefully chooses his craftsmen, based upon their own finely honed skills. Staff carpenters both frame and finish John’s homes – creating a sense of ownership and pride throughout the building process...so much so, he said, that letting go of the home at completion can be difficult for the staff.
John is committed to personal service and limits the number of projects to four or five per year: “Client communication is singularly the most important thing we do. It’s important that home owners’ needs are met; working out details face to face is the best way to make certain they are satisfied with their homes.”
Native log, timber frame, contemporary...the palette of an artist.
“We have the business capabilities of the larger firms,” John explains. “Our clients expect this level of professionalism.” The firm’s modern software supports detailed scheduling, sophisticated cost controls, daily field reports, and itemized spreadsheet billing. Integrity, pride in meeting a challenge, quality material, skilled craftsmen, modern practices, and face-to-face client communication – these are the hallmarks of John Walker and Mill Iron Timberworks.
